SRS Cares for Each Other: India

Although SRS is not able to hold its traditional Asia Week celebration this year, here are a variety of independent resources and activities for learning about the culture, traditions, holidays, art, architecture, and geography of India. 

Visit National Geographic Kids and Kids World Travel Guide for an overview of India’s history, geography, people, culture, and landmarks.

Visit BrianPop and Kid World Citizen to learn about the history of Diwali, India’s biggest and most important holiday of the year.  You can also learn about rangoli, a colorful folk art used during festivals and find information about how to make rangoli art on your own. 

Visit BrianPop to learn about Mahatma Gandhi whose use of nonviolent protest helped lead to India’s Independence. 

Visit Kid World Citizen to learn about saris, one of the most common outfits used by the women of India. 

Visit Kid World Citizen to learn about henna art and to find a henna activity you can do at home. 

Visit Kid World Citizen to learn about why ankle bells play a special part in classical Indian dance and find an ankle bell activity you can do at home. 

Visit Kid World Citizen to learn how to make Indian desserts called gulab jamun and dodo (milk) peda
